HRADIO at the annual MediaHub Brussels conference

On the 27th of June, the Brussels MediaHub held its annual Conference. As part of the conference theme ‘Innovating Media Economics’, HRADIO coordinator Simon Delaere of imec-SMIT presented the project’s objectives, activities and results during a session on R&D project best practices. The target of the presentation was to promote the benefits of HRADIO’s approach to the Belgian media ecosystem, announce the open availability of our components to broadcasters and developers, and talk about the advantages of European scale innovation activities.

Interactive radio workshop at ACM TVX

On the 5th of June, the first workshop on Interactive Radio Experiences (IRE) took place at ACM TVX, the International Conference on Interactive Experiences for Television and Online Video, at MediaCityUK in Salford, UK. Despite the increasingly interactive nature of radio experiences, the topic has been neglected so far at TVX and other conferences that address interactive media. The workshop, jointly organised by the H2020-projects MARCONI and HRadio, brought together researchers and practitioners working on tools, services and applications that enable interactive radio experiences.

From the 31st of March till the 2nd of April, HRADIO was present at Radiodays Europe in Lausanne to showcase different hybrid radio use cases. Radiodays Europe is born as a response to the needs of the European industry, public and private, to come together to discuss the new media challenges, across borders. It has since grown to become the most important annual conference for radio professionals. At the event, MARCONI and the project HRADIO had a joint booth at the exhibition and were also presented during the conference.

Online demo & technical info of transparent DAB(+) distribution over IP

Radio is going digital – slowly but steadily. Currently, this happens in two different worlds: one of them being DAB(+) and the other IP streaming. DAB(+) is a sophisticated and efficient broadcast standard with many clearly specified add-on functionalities – but it does not support personalisation of its services.  In contrast, IP-based radio services can offer all kinds of direct interactions. However, using unicast for everything can be costly for providers and consumers. HRADIO has set out to seamlessly combine the best of both worlds, by making radio truly hybrid – on the service as well as the signaling side. HRADIO pilot 1: results on the “channel screen” feature

During the first pilot, one of the features being tested was “channel screen”. This prototype offers listeners the opportunity to personalise their programmes, but also switch between live radio and personalised on-demand content. This first pilot gave in-depth insights into how users prefer to control their hybrid radio experience. The concept was well-received among participants and the combination of on-demand and live listening experiences proved valuable.

From the 24th till the 26th of January, the Salon de la Radio took place in Paris. The European radio show undoubtedly marks the middle of the radio season. HRADIO on innovation street at Media Fast Forward 2018

Media Fast Forward is a yearly networking and inspiration event, organised by VRT, about the future of media. On the 14th of December, more than a 1000 media professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs and innovators gathered in Bozar, Brussels, to find inspiration, gain insights and network for future collaborations. Aside from a conference, there was an exhibition with over 40 startups and an innovation street, showcasing prototypes of various European projects. For HRADIO, a car dashboard was illustrated on a booth, where you could experience the functionalities of hybrid radio.

From the 4th till the 6th of December, HRADIO was represented at ICT 2018, one of the largest research and innovation events that focuses on the European Union’s priorities in the digital transformation of society and industry. The HRADIO project is proud to announce that the OMRI specification has been published by ETSI (www.etsi.org) The OpenMobileRadioInterface (OMRI) API proposal was mainly designed by HRADIO project partners together with WorldDAB and will be the starting point for new HRADIO developments. It provides an easy-to-use application layer interface to embedded tuner functionalities and will ideally support the “write once, run anywhere” promise for application developers and content providers.

Prototype 7: The One with the Device Pairing

The user scenario

Jenny is often on the road . At the moment, she is in her car, listening to a radio interview with one of her favourite artists. When she arrives at work, the interview is still going, and she would like to continue listening. She is able to pause the radio and continue listening at work, via her browser or mobile phone. But also, when she gets home, she can continue listening at home, via her home radio device.

Prototype 6: The One with the Guaranteed Signal and Quality

The user scenario

Karl has invested in a decent hi-fi system, so he can enjoy his radio and music. Karl doesn’t even have to manually switch between DAB or FM. His new HRADIO receiver automatically makes sure he switches to the most qualitative audio and purest signal. Karl’s wife Sarah often crosses the border while travelling for work. Her HRADIO receiver automatically picks the best signal. That way, Sarah doesn’t have to worry about her radio reception and can concentrate on the road. Laetitia, daughter of Karl and Sarah, is often a passenger is her parents’ car. She likes to listen to her own radio station via her smartphone and headphone. Before, she often had difficulties listening to the show as the connection sometimes failed. With her HRADIO receiver the signal is seamless, and her audio quality remains excellent.

Alexandra’s new car has voice control. It is very convenient to operate her navigation system while she is driving. She would like to use the system for her radio as well but sometimes the system misunderstands her or has a very awkward way of pronouncing radio station names. She wants her voice control to work better and smarter, so that she can use it for her radio as well.
